The catch-up #69

19th Jun 2008

The Feeling have been on holiday for the last couple of weeks, but we were eager to hear from them, so we called up Dan in an Italian villa for a bit of a catch-up.

Hi Dan. How's it going?
Good, thanks. I'm on holiday at the moment. It's the first proper holiday we've had since we started. In fact, I think it's four or five years since I've had a holiday.

What's everyone doing with their holiday?

Well, me and Richard are both in Italy, except I'm a bit further north than he is. Kevin's gone to Austria and Ciaran is staying at home putting cupboards together or something. And I think Paul's going away in the UK.

Had you been busy before the holiday?
Gosh, I can't really remember. Um... we did the Graham Norton show and I met Susan Sarandon, which was great fun. She was lovely. We had a nice, long chat for about half an hour afterwards.

And you and Richard presented Fearne Cotton with an award.

Yes, a Glamour award, which was lots of fun. We were at a table with Jonathan Ross and the Friday Night Project boys. That was a good night.

Didn't you go to Cannes too?

Oh yeah, that was amazing. And before that we played the Life Ball in Vienna, which is a big Aids charity do. It's televised live in Austria. People like Debbie Harry, Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone were there too. It was a crazy experience. We played at the opening ceremony bit. They do a big concert and then have a big party afterwards. There was a big Agent Provocateur catwalk show happening while we played. So we were playing 'Thought It Was Over' as the supermodels strutted up and down.

Plus, of course, you shot the video for 'Turn It Up'.

Yes, with all those amazing extras. It was a real treat. We made it with Caswell Coggins, the guy who directed the 'Sewn' video. He came up with this idea of a look for a video that involved lots of dressing up and lots of extras. We've got dancing girls, a marching band with masks on and two majorette troops. It was a real mix of the kind of people you'd have at a celebration of something. I dressed up as a marionette, one of those French-style clowns. It was good.

How long did filming take?
Just a day. We started at 7am and finished at 1am the next morning. So it was a long day, but we're used to them now!

Are you happy with the video?
Yeah, I think it's lovely actually. It's got a nice look to it. But it's quite hard to judge something when you're in it.

You've also been appearing in people's advert breaks of late.

Oh yes, of course, the Toyota ad! I'm not sure people realise it's us, but it's nice to have the music on there.

Will that track, 'Join With Us', be the single after 'Turn It Up'?
I think there's a good chance of it, yeah. But it's not been decided for sure yet.

So, once you're back off holiday, you'll be doing the summer shows.

Yeah, we've got lots of those. And then we'll be announcing our own tour for later in the year, which we're already making plans for. I want it to top anything we've done before.

Have you been writing too?

I have indeed. I've got tons of ideas floating around. I'm already looking forward to starting work on another record. I'm always writing and coming up with new ideas.

Are you excited about the Bon Jovi tour?

Really excited, yeah. I always look forward to doing our thing in front of a crowd that hasn't paid specifically to see us. It's nice to get the chance to prove yourself to a different audience. It'll be a great warm-up for Glastonbury too, which we're all looking forward to enormously.

Presumably you won't be playing your cover of 'Livin' On A Prayer' at the Bon Jovi shows.

No, I don't think that would go down too well with them.

Maybe you could do 'The Final Countdown' by Europe, which was from a similar sort of time.

Yes! In fact, perhaps we could do a series of hits from that period. I bet that would go down really badly. But I'd love to do a set of all songs by people like Def Leppard and Whitesnake. I'd be able to get my spandex out and everything. Now, that would be fun.
